Many people wonder why it is that red wine seems to get spilled by guests more than any other beverage. Maybe it just seems that way. Some have speculated that drinkers know the havoc that a glass of red wine can wreak on fabrics and carpet alike. This knowledge supposedly makes them nervous and jittery, and therefore clumsy, when they’re guests in another person’s home. A wine stain will discolor just about any fabric that it comes into contact with, so it’s no laughing matter, especially if it happens to you! Regardless of the method you use to clean up the spill, it’s important to realize that you clean it up as quickly as possibly as the longer it sits the more difficult it will be to remove it. Here is the basic method for removing red wine stains:
1. Pour lots of cold water onto the stained area as soon as possible.
2. Blot gently with a cloth and sprinkle salt onto the red wine stain. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Note: Do NOT rub as this will further set the stain.
3. Rinse the area with cold water while gently rubbing out the red wine stain.
4. Continue to repeat steps 1-3 until the stain cannot be removed further.
5. Rub the area with liquid laundry detergent and let it stand for several minutes before rinsing thoroughly with cold water.
6. Carefully apply a spot stain remover stick, spray or gel and wash according to clothing directions with liquid laundry detergent.
One of the major problems with red wine stains is that they happen most often on carpet. While you can gather up your tablecloth or clothing, treat and launder it, removing your carpet for laundering just is not possible. So here is some tried and true advice if red wine gets spilled on your carpet:
• Use white wine – Many people swear that, because white wine neutralizes red wine and makes it easier to lift the color off the carpet, it can be your true companion. Simply pour white wine over the stained area and very gently blot the liquid up with a thick towel. Be very careful not to rub the stain as this will force it into the carpet or clothing fibers. Once you have the majority of the spill blotted u, use your favorite carpet shampoo and clean as you would a dirt stain.
• Commercial stain removers – There are a host of tried and true stain removers available at your local supermarket or cleaning supply store including club soda, salt, Scotchgard’s Oxy Carpet Cleaner and a must-have product called “Wine Away.” When poured onto a stain, the carbonation in club soda will help to lift the stain from the carpet fibers while the salt acts as a buffer to keep the stain from setting. Many people tout the benefits of Scotchgard’s Oxy Carpet Cleaner to lift stains and provide a stain protector to the area of the carpet it was used to clean. It is available at most discount stores for about $6. Wine Away has been tested and recommended by the Good Housekeeping Institute. It is truly a successful method that every red wine lover should have stowed in their cleaning cabinet

Hello, I don’t think I’ve caught all the angles of this subject the way you’ve pointed them out. You’re a true star, a rock star man. You’ve got so much to say and know so much about the subject that I think you should just teach a class about it

Hello…My husband and I thought it would be a fun idea to go to a wine tasting for a fun activity we could do together, but we both have never gone to one before. That is a good idea to get a designated driver before we go. We didn’t even think about that. We wouldn’t want to drive back to the hotel after a few cups of wine. Thanks for the tips!
