The definition of the word hero means: a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal: A hero is someone who is brave and courageous in spite of the tremendous odds against him or her. It is a person who truly makes a difference in people’s lives, forever changing their lives for the better. There are many people I consider heroes. Everyday soldiers are on guard fighting for our freedom without a second thought about themselves. They freely sacrifice their lives for the freedom of the people of this great country.
But what about the stranger who saves a defenceless woman, as the burglar attacks her and takes her purse, while the stranger runs after the man and gets the purse back? This scenario does not always happen but when it does we all pay attention. Heroes can be your neighbor next door that does a good deed for you or someone in need; It can be a policeman, fireman, political figure like Abraham Lincoln, or Mother Theresa. All of these people have made our lives better because of their sacrifices. Abraham Lincoln stood his ground to abolish slavery even though there were many people against it. Mother Theresa went to Calcutta to the poorest area to help children in need. It was not an easy task and not one that many of us would have the resources to do.
In these negative times we should look to those heroes in your life and thank them. My father is my hero just as some of the others I have mentioned are. My father is and has always guided me and been there for me. He was a strong shoulder to cry on when disappointments and challenges came upon me in my life. He celebrated with me when I had my two daughters and when I got remarried after my husband died. He’s still alive today and he faces challenges everyday with his health. Yet he still knows who I am and asks how I am.
Just last week there was an article in the Northwest Herald about a teenaged boy who wanted to do something for the soldiers in Afghanistan. He started a campaign to send pizzas to them. The program is called Pizzas for Patriots. Over 40,000 pizzas have been sent to the soldiers so they too can have a piece of home while serving away from their friends and family.
When I was growing up children looked up to people who proved to be brave and honorable. I hope and pray that we can regain the power of recognizing and saluting those we consider a hero. By honoring or remembering them maybe we can follow in their footsteps. Maybe we too can give a little more to help one another, or to be more like the hero you so dearly find a special place in your heart. So my question is who is your hero?
