Trends in baby gear are ever changing, and as of right now the trends are as follows:
Covers: Shopping cart covers, high chair covers, changing pad covers, ad infinitum. No one wants to take their baby out in public and let them get germs, and so the new thing is to buy a shopping cart cover that goes right over the bars of the shopping cart, and your baby sits in it That way if they suck on anything, they are only sucking on what you want them to. Most of these covers are similar to a slip cover for a couch, they are washable, and come in many different patterns or colors.
Bling: A baby that is not covered in rhinestones is not a trendy baby. The big trend for babies right now is to have their gear encrusted in rhinestones. Everything from their clothes to their bottles, have to have shiny rhinestones on it to show that they have style. You can purchase pacifiers with rhinestones for around $5, T-shirts with rhinestone sayings, like “Mommy’s Boy” etc. for about $20, and everything else you can imagine. If you want to be hip and trendy, find the baby gear that has the bling.

Travel systems: No longer do you buy your stroller from one place, your car seat from another, your diaper bag from another. The hot new trend is to buy a whole “travel system.” This is often a stroller that has the ability to carry the car seat as well, and lock it in, so that when your baby is an infant you do not have to remove them from their car seat to go for a walk, or shop at the mall. Then, as they grow older the stroller may convert or change so that it fits their needs more. The idea is to buy it all together so that you know it is compatible, and so that it is all the same pattern and style. In addition, often this is less expensive than buying each item separately.
Changing mats: When you are out in public and have to change your baby, where are you going to do it? What if the surface is not sanitized? One big trend is to carry a portable changing mat with you. You can buy them for under $10, or more for the fancier, name brand ones, and they usually fit nicely in a standard sized diaper bag. They can be taken out for diaper changes, then folded and stored when done. Usually they have a washable surface for easy clean up. They come in a variety of colors and styles, and often they are included in a diaper bag package.
Lilly pads: These are reusable nursing pads for the breastfeeding mother. They do not just catch leaks, but are supposed to stop them. They stick to your breast, and you invert the nipples, so that the milk does not come down into them. They last about 3 months, at which time the stickiness is worn off, and they have to be replaced. They can be worn on their own without a bra, or other support. You can wear them swimming, etc. They cost about $20 for one set, sometimes more, sometimes less. They are comfortable to sleep in, and are very popular.
