When your child is two-months old, they are going to be further developing the skills that they were learning when they were one-month old, but they are also going to be mastering some new skills. Since your baby will be developing new skills, you will need to add different toys to their activities so that they can continue learning through play.
When your baby turns two months old, no longer will they be content with laying still and looking at flashing lights. Around two months is when they are going to learn how to wave their arms and kick their legs when they are excited. This movement is the same movement that your baby will make when stepping, but it is easier to lift those heavy legs when they are lying down for the first few months. Your baby will also be able to locate sounds in front of them, but they will not be able to locate sounds behind them yet. They will also be able to turn to the correct side if they hear a sound, however, they will not be able to locate where the sound is coming from.
Your baby’s senses are their first learning source, so floor gyms are a great development toy for a young baby. Floor gyms can help enhance both visual and listening skills for your baby because they provide plenty of stimulation. Floor gyms will encourage your baby to kick, reach, and bat at hanging toys. The play gym is going to help your baby develop their motor skills, but it can also lay the groundwork for understanding cause and effect. At around two months of age your baby is going to start understanding that they can make things happen. For example, if your baby bats a toy it will swing or if your baby hits a toy the lights might start.
In addition to play gyms other toys that encourage physical activity for your baby, such as kicking, are great for this age. The reason for that is that kicking is something that comes naturally to babies; kicking also exercises the muscles that your baby will use one day for walking. Toys that encourage kicking are bouncy seats that have toys attached to them or jumpy seats that allow children to bounce and play. When using toys that encourage kicking you are going to need to place your baby in front of the toy so their feet are within easy reach. When they are kicking toys, you can begin talking to them about cause and effect, as they kick the toy talk to them about what they just did.
Activity quilts are another toy that your baby will enjoy. Activity quilts are great toys because arms and legs for your baby are always on the move. Your baby will enjoy kicking and reaching at toys because as they are batted the toys will move just out of reach. An activity quilt is full of visual appeal, but they also have different textures, and many activities that will satisfy a range of needs. Activity mats will help your baby exercise motor skills, but they will also stimulate senses and challenge their cognitive skills. When placing your baby on an activity mat you want to make sure you place your baby in a position so that their arms and feet are within batting and kicking range of the objects and activities. Choose an activity mat that has colors and high-contrast patterns so that you can stimulate your baby’s visual sense; having a mat that plays sounds will help to stimulate your baby’s hearing.
