As a part of today’s economy and society, many people have started making their own products and recycling the materials that they have around their homes. Recycling materials is not only done by recycling aluminum cans and newspaper, but you can also recycle the materials that are around your yard. These materials consist of grass clippings, tree trimmings and leaves. Placing these materials into a compost bin will allow the materials to turn into a rich dark compost that you can place in your flower beds and garden to create a rich soil that will allow your plants to flourish.
You can purchase a compost bin or you can make your own. Making your own compost bin will take a few pieces of materials and some time. You will also need to know where you are going to place your compost bin, how big your compost bin is going to be and what you are going to make your compost bin out of. Start by knowing where you are going to place your compost bin. You will want it in an area that is easily accessible and also in a place that will not disturb your neighbors. As the recycled materials you place into the compost bin are created into compost, they may create a small that will disturb the neighbors around you.
Once you know where you are going to place your compost bin, you need to choose the material that you are going to use for your compost bin. Most homemade compost bins are made from recycled wood products. You can use old pallets that can be picked up at your local hardware store or grocery store. You can also use old wooden fence materials or wooden products that are in your home you don’t want anymore, such as a wooden dresser. To make your own compost bin, you can also use an old plastic bucket or garbage can. When using a plastic source for your compost bin, the smell that can come out of your compost bin will be limited.
The size of your compost bin needs to be no smaller than three by three and no larger than five by five. These sizes will help the recycled materials you have placed from your yard a change to turn into compost with the moisture, heat and oxygen that is needed. Fill the bin to half way or just above half way full. As you fill the bin up, you will have a chance to mix or stir the materials that you have placed into the bin. This will allow the materials to receive the natural elements it needs to create the compost.
If you have chosen to use a plastic source for your compost bin, such as a garbage can, make sure the garbage has come with a lid. The lid will allow you access to place your materials and also to stir or mix the materials. Drill eight to ten small holes into the bottom of the garbage can. This will allow the moisture to enter if the compost needs it or drain the extra moisture it does not need. You can also drill a few holes into the side of your garbage can. You want your recycled materials to breathe enough oxygen, but not have too much oxygen.
Using a wooden product is a great natural source to use. As a natural source, the bottom of your storage bin may start to rot. To prevent this from happening, place your wooden compost bin above ground. This will allow the moisture to drain properly and prevent your wooden compost bin from rotting.
