Explaining ” church ” and the concept of an invisible Jesus to a 3 yr old is a tricky business…….
Our nanny has taught boytjie to sing the old Sunday School song “Jesus Loves Me”. He’s been singing “YYYYEEEESSSSSS, Jesus Loves me……” the whole week, so we decided to try and “prep” him for church by explaining that the church is Jesus’ house where we go to listen to what Jesus wants to teach us.
Of course all of these explanations were followed by the usual “VIR WAT? ” ( what for? ) questions.
“Kom, gee jou handjie dan bid ons saam” ( hold hands, we’re going to pray )
“VIR WAT? ” ( what for ? )
“Om vir Liewe Jesus te vra om na ons te kyk vandag” ( to ask Jesus to be with us today )
“VIR WAT ? ” ( what for? )
And in church :
“Sjuut, ons luister wat die tannie sê ” ( we have a female minister )
“Vir wat moet ek stilbly??? “
“Dat ons kan hoor wat sy van Jesus vertel ” ( so we can hear what Jesus’ message is )
The mention of “Jesus” connected the dots for him………
He was up on the bench :
“Mamma, nou WAAR is Hy dan ? ” ( so where is Jesus then ? )
(looking around wildly )
Oh well, it least the congregation had a good chuckle.
Now for the explaining bit……
