Does your child get bored sitting inside all day when the weather is too poor to be outdoors or when you are too busy to accompany them? Well, try one or all of the following five ideas to get them more excited about spending time indoors:
1. Make something.
Kids love to create things and one awesome way to have fun indoors, is by making something that will captivate their attention. For example, if you have a daughter, you might buy some wire, clasps and beads, and allow them to make their own jewelry. You will be able to enjoy the process of watching them work and learn, they will enjoy making something that is for themselves that helps them express their creativity. Boys may enjoy something like putting together a wood car or an airplane. The possibilities are endless but first you need to find out what they are interested in then buy the supplies they will need to for their project.
2. Cook something.
Kids love being inventive and cooking is one of the best ways for them to express that inventiveness. Within reason, let your child cook whatever they want. If they want to make spaghetti with marshmallows or perhaps a smoothie, let them. It is a fun way to pass an afternoon, and if they make something edible, you can enjoy it, too.
3. Make a movie.
Most parents do not want their kids watching television or movies all day, but they often get sick of answering questions or entertaining their children. Instead of watching a movie, consider letting your children make one. Give them the camcorder and let them make their own movie. The end result will likely be quite funny and you might discover a budding actor or director!
4. Write and illustrate a story.
Help your children write a story. It can be about anything and once they’re done writing it, you can help them type it up and print it on paper. Then let them draw pictures on the paper to illustrate the story. Finally, you can help them finish their ‘book’ by stapling the pages together or punching holes in one side of the pages and binding them with string or maybe twist ties.
5. Play hide and seek for prizes.
One of the coolest games you can play with your kids on a day indoors is hide and seek. Your kids will enjoy the challenge of finding places in the house to hide and you will enjoy the few minutes of quiet and peace as they wait in silence to be found. Award some sort of prize to the person who hides the best. This could be an afternoon free from doing their chores or an extra serving of dessert with dinner.
As any parent knows, children having to spend the day indoors, for whatever reason, are usually not happy children. The ideas mentioned here will hopefully inspire a day or two of fun and create lasting memories of fun had indoors.
